Urban explores find an abandoned building built in the late 1800’s. Canton Ohio location, believe this building to have been a railroad hotel for the YMCA also known as the Pennsylvania YMCA building. This building was built for mostly traveling men. During our research we found a post card that shows this building to be on the first YMCA’s established in the United State which was built the late 1800’s. The first YMCA to be established in the United States was located in the city of Boston in 1851. Roughly six years later, the YMCA organization which was founded in London by George Williams started building may more near rails. Back in the days, the Americans recognized challenges and hazards created by the migration of men from the countryside to the city with the rise of the industrial revolution. This movement quickly spread. After the Civil War, roughly 59 YMCA thought USA existed. This particular YMCA building was also known as the 270-Pennsylvane Railroaded Canton YMCA and was one of the 59. Back in the days, the YMCA focus was on saving souls, with saloon and street corner preaching, lists of Christian boarding houses, lectures, libraries and meeting halls, most of them had rented quarters. His building had three floors of small one bedroom rooms. Later, the YMCA made some improvements and added or incorporated spiritual, mental, social and physical conditioning of young men.” Today, the YMCA is mostly health fitness organization.
It is alleged the building was taken over by the CIA for a top secrets classified project called MK-Ultra a mind altering control project. Testing and converting human minds continue during the cold war and up to the Nixon years. The building may have been abandoned by the CIA sometime around 1969. For the last 50 years the site was fenced in and used as a junk yard. It was not until recent years that the car junkyard removed the cars and released the property. City View Center located in Garfield Heights was built on a garbage dump landfill. Right after construction, the parking lots started to settle, crack, and sink. In 2006, Walmart evacuated due to supposed methane leaks. Additionally, the EPA started to put on pressure about the methane gas underground sewers. After Walmart moved out, the City View complex slowly emptied out and now, during the winter of 2015 the shopping plaza looks like a ghost town. If you go to google earth, you will find this shopping center and you will find a fluorescent green hidden poison lake. I call this marmalade green lake” The Leachate Death Plum Lake”. When I visited this area during one of my Urban Explorations, I did not see and lake life with exception of geese occasionally landing to drink water. No fish, no frogs, not toads, no nothing lives in this lake. There aren’t even any insects buzzing about. Every couple hours, a flock of geese flying above would land into this poison lake. After a while, the geese realize this lake has nothing to offer and leave. I watch this occur for several hours. Unfortunately, many geese are or will be poisoned by drinking the water. These geese may now suffer from; NWHD Normal Waterfowl Habitat Disorder, WDBD Waterfowl dissociation brain disorder, DLP Duck lead poisoning, DW Droop Wing (geese wings hung flaccidly by their sides or sometimes they just fall out of the sky), and even WMS Duck Metals Sterilization.
A major problem arising from landfills is the discharge of leachate which is contaminated with various organic and inorganic pollutants. This leachate leaches into the surrounding soil, ground water or surface water leads small ponds that have severe pollution problems. Some pollutants are Dissolution of soluble salts or soluble organic material. The dissolved organic material such as humic acids will produce a brown color in the leachate. Much of the original organic material in the fill has low solubility but the biodegradation of this material tends to produce more soluble end products such as simple organic acids and alcohols. The nitrogen present in the original organic material is converted into ammonia in the leachate. A landfill quickly becomes anaerobic, thus becoming chemically reducing environments where ferric salts will be reduced to ferrous salts. Ferrous salts are more soluble and thus iron leaches from the landfill. Another means how contaminants leach is via the sulphate in the tip may be biochemically reduced to sulphides, although this may lead to evolution of small quantities of hydrogen sulphide, the sulphide will remain in the landfill as highly insoluble metal sulphides. Suspended solids and turbidity may be present in the leachate due to the washout of fine solid material. Therefore, leachate contains a range of organic and inorganic. Sometimes, the water became as acidic as lemon juice, creating a toxic brew of heavy metal poisons including arsenic, lead, and zinc. This liquid often contains high levels of organics such as methylene chloride, dichloroethylene, toluene, phenols, and benzene and inorganic pollutants including ammonia, heavy metals and endocrine disrupting chemicals, resistent to ordinary wastewater treatment. So I call this Geese Genocide.

Victoreen Instrument Company owner John A. “Jack” Victoreen (1902-1986) started out as a Cleveland, Ohio radio and radio parts manufacturer. By the late 1920s (Victoreen Radio Co. later became George A. Walker Co.). Later, the Victoreen Instrument Co. was founded in 1928 to manufacture and market radiation measurement instrumentation. Victoreen provided much of the radiation equipment for the secret Manhattan Project which would develop the nuclear bombs that were dropped on Japan. Victoreen provided 95% of the instrumentation for the Bikini atomic bomb tests after World War II where over 250 atomic bombs were detonated in the USA air space that caused thousands of American cancer deaths. The instrument division would grow to be a major supplier of civil defense radiation survey meters in the 1960’s, and a supplier of instruments to every branch of industry and medicine involving radiation. Furthermore, dectors were sold thousands of civilians because of nuclear threats during the cold war. Victoreen was sold and broken up into small companies. By 1980, Sheller-Globe which owned Victoreen disposed of some additional units which were not as profitable as desired. Some remnants of the Victoreen Company are still in business today including the resistor division now owned by Ohmite and the radiation monitoring business that is now part of Fluke Biomedical. Soon after the sale of Victoreen, the building on South Woodland Cleveland Ohio would go vacant. The Victoreen corporate children’s playground would also go vacant. The abandoned property now is visited by looters, scrap dealer and polluters. The property is completer contained with asbestos, lead paint, possible radiation, and other environmental hazards.

East Cleveland was partially founded by Scottish immigrants, whose names can still be found in the city such as Shaw Ave. , McIlrath Ave. , and Eddy Rd. . East Cleveland incorporated as a village in 1895 and became a city in 1911. This charter included provisions for women’s suffrage, which at the time was unheard of east of the Mississippi River. Before the charter passed, the city of Cleveland unsuccessfully attempted to annex the municipality in 1910 and in 1916.
East Cleveland includes a portion of Euclid Avenue, which from the 1860s through the 1920s was known as “Millionaire’s Row.” The many estates along this stretch of road in East Cleveland including the home of the late John D. Rockefeller, the Standard Oil founder and “the world’s first billionaire.”

Abandoned churches. St. Joseph Byzantine Catholic Church was located on Orleans Avenue in Cleveland, Ohio and was initially constructed in 1913 and rebuilt in 1928. After 70 years the church closed in 1980. The building struggled along for several decades before becoming abandoned in 2002. The clergymen were permitted to get married which caused some issues with Roman Catholics. Many of Byzantine Rite Catholics defected to the Russian Orthodox Church.
Byzantine Rite Catholic Church, also called Greek Catholic, was founded that retained much of the Eastern Orthodox traditions. Masses were held on Old Slavonic rather than traditional Catholic Latin They used the Julian calendar instead of the Gregorian calendar.
In the 1970s, the neighborhood began to decline both in population and in demographics. The congregation was steadily shrinking and not being replaced. During this time, parish members began migrating out of the city to the suburbs. The expense of maintaining the building and the grounds forced the congregation to abandon the location in 1980. Later, the building was taken over by the Greater Zion Hill Baptist Church community, who in turn abandoned the building.
