Cleveland’s abandoned Warner & Swasey complex
The WARNER & SWASEY CO. was a leading manufacturer of machine tools, telescopes, and precision instruments. New England machinists WORCESTER P. WARNER† and AMBROSE SWASEY† formed a partnership in Chicago in 1880. They moved to Cleveland. They opened a machine tool shop on Carnegie Ave. near E. 55th St. in Aug. 1881. The firm produced turret lathes for tanks and planes used in several wars. Utilizing the same techniques and machinery used to produce machine tools, they also produced telescopes. In 1886 the firm built the largest telescope at the time for the Lick Observatory in California, and later completed large telescopes for the U.S. Naval Observatory and the Yerkes Observatory in Wisconsin. During World War II, the company employed 7,000 people. Warner & Swasey’s closed it last remaining plant in Solon in Jan. 1992 ending the century old company.

How to find a water leak vinyl siding without Tyvek

How to find a water leak. Vinyl siding with no Tyvek drainage plane
In this video were going to show you how to find a water leak in a new home that has vinyl siding and no drainage plane such as Tyvek plastic sheathing. During this investigation I was accompanied by the a local piano celebrity that goes by the name of T. Theodore Edward Dylewski from the famous “T and Rich Dueling Pianos Show” purchased a new home built in 1997 in the city of Avon Lake located in Ohio. Soon after moving into the home, Theodore noticed a slightly moist floor corner in the first floor dining room. He knew it wasn’t a winter problem because it leaked on and off all summer. He knew it was not a plumbing problem, became the second floor bathroom was not located above this moist floor area. He knew it wasn’t a gutter problem because his gutters were cleaned and did not appear to overflow. T was not sure if the dinning room leak was from his Anderson Window not have end dams at the bottom sills, the house missing the Tyvek drainage plane, a possible condensation problem, or if it was the exterior wall penetrations that were not 100 % caulk sealed.

During the water leak investigation, T and I perfumed initial moisture testing, took photos of old moisture stains of the ding room floor and of the basement band joist pockets that existed below this moist floor area. This was done to create a base line to see if anything would change after water testing.

We tested the wall surface temperatures and indoor humidty to determine if wall condensation conditions might be occuring. They were not.

Soon after, we started to water test the back of the house vinyl siding and all mechanical penetrations such as AC suction line, electrical service, and cable with a water hose. We did find that the water leaked at mechanical wall penetrations; however, these were below the dining room floor moist area. T knew that his first repair was going to be easy. He will remove all basement band joist insulation and caulk all holes, penetrations, and joints. We then water tested the windows and window frames. Water did not appear to be leaking at the windows. T’s second repair was going to be easy also. He was going to caulk all Anderson sill End dams that were exposed. We continued to water test the back of the home’s, upper siding, lower siding and even underneight the vinyl siding. It wasn’t until we water tested the corner that we realized some water intrusion. The dining room floor stain became larger and the floor moisture content increased. Below the dinning room, the band joist pockets also became visually moist.

This repair was not going to be difficult. T would have to install a drainage plane like Tyvek behind the vinyl siding at this dining room exterior corner location. It was determined that the dinning room floor leak was largely contributed by the lack of a drainage plane such as Tyvek. Moisture encounter appeared to be form the unprotected sheathing at corner, at sheathing but joints and at box band joists. In this case, T was lucky that leaks were not occuring at other areas of the home. Some of his neighbors may not be so lucky. During this building era, many cities such as Avon Lake Ohio permitted building homes without drainage planes. Yes, you must drain the rain. You must have Plan B. What was the city of Avon Lake thinking back in 1997?

Goats and sheep

Goats and Sheep are being used to eat grass, eat weeds, and clean brush. Goat Lawnmower.

John Deer, Toro, animal activists, vegans, vegetarians, Pet Smart executives and the Mexican consulate are all in Washington lobbying that goats, sheep and cow lawn mower weed wickers is considered animal cruelty, a form of tax evasion, unconstitutional and also they argue that they will increase the unemployment rate.
At this time, the world has 500 million goats and the USA is the biggest goat importer. There are over 200 species of goat and an average goat life span is ten years. You can now scrap your gas guzzling, pollution – spewing lawn equipment. Goats can jump five feet, climb trees, go over rocks, swim and even see in the dark. They’ll chomp on your grass, weeds, bushes, thistle, blackberries, poison oak and ivy, kudzu, vines such as trumpet vine, sage brush, sapling trees (such as pine, cedar, oak), and broom sage . Additionally just like the sheep and cow, they leave fresh fertilizer in their wake and their sharp hooves aerate and churn the soil, making it easier for water and nutrients to penetrate to the root zone.
Both the male and females goats have horns. Not only do goats eat eight pounds of grass and weeds per day, they also can provide milk which tastes great and is probably better for you. You can even get some Mohair or Cashmere. If you have too many goats, you rent them out to your neighbors or just eat a few. The chevon or Cabito goat meat is low in fat and low in cholesterol. No wonder the government does not want you to buy goats. They create cloth, milk, meat, don’t complain, don’t collect workers compensation, don’t sue you for back injuries, don’t pay taxes, plus, you don’t have house them, feed them, groom them or even pet them. Now some goats are picky eaters we need a few sheep.
The world has over 1 billion sheep so they very plenty full. Whatever the goats don’t eat, the sheep will. Like goats, sheep produce wool, their intestines can make tennis rackets, and when you have too many of them you can eat them too. Not only do they taste great, have the lowest cholesterol levels of all the meats, the left over fat can be used to make soap and candles.
Now for your country folk, with several acres, just get a cow which can eat 25 pounds of grass per day. Cows just like sheep and goats are ruminants with four stomachs and all have huge appetites. The only problem with cows, is when you slaughter them to eat, you will need a freezer. I am quite sure you can trade in your John Deer for a freezer.
While at the new farm thing, kick the dog out and put him to work. He could Shepard the sheep goats and cows and protects them from wild animals. While you at it get rid of the rest of the pets. You kids won’t have asthma, you would need prescription allergy medication and you will live longer. If you need to pet an animal, pet a goat.

Mulch: The Truth- We All Have Been Scammed

There are also many types of mulch you buy. According to advertisements, pine or hardwood mulch last longer, shredded hardwood bark mulch has a lot of nutrients; pine needle mulch looks good, but does not last long. Sawdust mulch lasts long, but uses up the needed nitrogen. Wood chip mulch can be free from a tree cutting service but take forever to decompose, and has zero nutrition. Organic mulch cost more. Colored mulch looks good, Hay mulch contains weed seeds. Compost mulch may have some sewer sludge, permits a nutrient imbalance and contains high soluble salts. Newspaper mulch is flammable and contains carcinogens. Leaf mulch blows away. Bark mulch attracts wasps, ants, and termites. Rubber mulch does not deteriorate. Finally, cypress mulch lasts longer, holds more water, and is a natural insecticide. Now that you have been completely misinformed by commercialism, let’s get down to what I call “The Mulch Scams”. The Cypress Mulch Scam”. Cypress mulch contains natural chemicals that fend off insects and resist rot. The Cypress mulch did that many years ago when they used full-grown, fully developed, 100 year old Cypress trees. Due to unsustainable, over-harvesting of cypress trees, most cypress mulch now comes from immature baby trees that have not yet developed the properties that made Cypress mulch so popular decades ago. This is garbage contains pesticides, weed killers, chemicals, dog or cat feces, animal urine, newspapers with ink, cardboard with glue, phosphates, and other nasty stuff that gets recycled back into mulch. The black mulch does not occur in nature, except under anaerobic (means without oxygen) conditions where the soil is sickly and full of bad microbes. Furthermore, most common black colorant is carbon black, which is a byproduct of the chemical industry and a known carcinogen. Grab a handful of black mulch and rub it together in your hands. If your hands are stained, you might not want to use this stuff. Additionally colored mulched needs reclaimed or recycled wood to be able to absorb the colorant. You can bet that agriculture wood pallets that have spilled insecticides, factory pallets that had leaking chemicals, and wood crates from china all get chipped up and then dyed. Cocoa Bean Shells smell nice, but they contain theobromine, the same chemical that makes chocolate toxic to dogs. Therefore, the only thing we have left is the natural mulch with all natural products. Good luck finding this. Maybe we need to substitute the mulch with stone that comes in many colors just like mulch. The only thing different is that we know the stone is natural and safe unless you live in a glass house.

Urban Exploration Paper Mill, Trenton Ohio, Excello Lock

Urban Exploration: Paper Mill, Trenton Ohio, Excello Lock
In Trenton Ohio you can find an abandoned paper mill. This area is also known as Excello which is an unincorporated community in central Lemon Township, Butler County, Ohio. Additionally, this was the famous site of “The Excello Lock” which now protected by the Miami Conservancy. Next door to this lock, and who also used this lock to bring in raw materials was the Harding Paper Company which is now listed with the National Register of Historic Places.
A.E. Harding, founder of the Harding Paper Company, was born in England in 1829 to a family of papermakers. In 1865, Harding and his associates founded the Harding, Erwin & Company and constructed the first paper mill west of the Allegheny Mountains that manufactured fine writing paper… Initially, this mill had a capacity of 2,500 pounds of paper daily. By the 1970s, and a few ownership changes, the Harding-Jones Paper Company mill had a capacity of 44,000 pounds of paper per day. The plant was acquired by the Simpson Paper Company in 1983 and closed on April 30, 1990.
Ok, now that we have completed our history lesson we need to get in. We usually start out by knocking on the front door. Well, the door was open and nobody was home.
